Time Management Tips for Student Athletes

If you are a student-athlete, you know what it’s like to have a jam-packed schedule. Between school, sports, self-care, and socialization, there’s a lot to juggle. However, balancing your academic and athletic obligations is easy with the right time management skills.

At St. Timothy’s School, we recognize the value of time management for all our students, especially those on Titan sports teams. Our student-centered athletic program encourages children to have fun and be active while emphasizing the importance of balance in their daily lives. Below, we’ve compiled a list of the top time management tips for student-athletes.

Use an Academic Planner

As a student-athlete, you would be surprised how much a planner can make your life easier. Whether it’s a tangible agenda or an online calendar, an academic planner helps organize your assignments, deadlines, and practice schedule. An organized agenda helps you decide how to divide your time based on chronological importance, allowing you to map out tasks days, weeks, and even months in advance.

Plan Ahead

As a student-athlete, you do not have much time to waste. So, it’s essential to plan ahead when you can. Using your abovementioned academic planner, you can be more intentional with your tasks. For example, if you have a test next Monday and know you’ll have a busy week of practices ahead, you might start studying a week prior and do a little each day. Doing so will save you from cramming at the end of your busy weekend and allow you to take your test fully rested and mentally prepared.

Create a Routine

Establishing a routine is one of the most valuable time management tactics. From going to bed by a particular time to dedicating specific hours to studying, a well-balanced routine will allow a lot of time for sports, clubs, and free time. For example, you might carve out some relaxation time after your daily practices to recharge before starting homework. Having a schedule outside of school hours is a great way to manage your time efficiently and create balance in all aspects of your life.

Have a Productive Workspace

Having a designated workspace for your academics will do wonders for your time management. This area should be separate from where you do other daily activities like sleeping, eating, or having down time. Instead, it should be isolated and free of distractions, allowing you to maximize your productivity and create some free time in your schedule for sports or other activities.

Take Care of Yourself

Sports and school aside, self-care comes first at the end of the day. After all, the only way to perform your best on the field and in the classroom is to care for your body and brain. No matter how busy your schedule gets, making time for relaxation and self-care is always important. Doing so will put you in the position to succeed physically and academically while also maintaining a healthy mental headspace.
